As I am very new to the ATV world..
I notice here in the forum and on e-bay references to Honda TRX 250 , TRX 250 R ,
TRX 250 fourtrax . Are there 3 different 1986 models and does fourtrax refer to a 4 wheel drive ATV???

I will try to help. 1986 250r was a two-stroke 3 wheeler. 250sx was a 4-stroke 3-wheeler. Trx250 was a 4-stroke four wheeler and fourtrax=4 wheeler not 4 wheel drive. I believe there was a 250 big red also. The options on all these were a little different hence the need for so many "250" models.

The "FourTrax" name was used on ALL of Honda's 4 wheeled ATVs up until the end of the 2000 model year with the TRX300.
The 90, 300EX, and 400EX were changed to Sportrax. All of the utilities since then received unique names (Rubicon, Rincon, etc)
The "Fourtrax" does not designate 4WD,....just that it was Honda's name for the 4 wheelers.
Honda STILL uses the Fourtrax name in other countries instead of the unique model names that are used in the states and some other countries.


In 1986, you had two entirely different 250cc 4 wheelers
TRX250R FourTrax-2 stroke, 6 speed, race quad
(4 wheeled version of the ATC250R three wheeler)
TRX250 FourTrax-4 stroke, 5 speed with reverse, shaft drive, 2WD utility quad
(4 wheeled version of the ATC250ES BigRed three wheeler)

On the frame in the front portion is written on a label :
1986 TRX 250
stamped on the frame is this number ( Serial Number?)
JH3TE0605GC122516
So this fits the description of this ATV
TRX250 FourTrax-4 stroke, 5 speed with reverse, shaft drive

I wanted this info so I could order me a repair manual..
Wish I could find a factory manual but I guess I will settle for one of the aftermarket manuals...
I have removed the fuel tank and cleaned it will start re-installing tomorrow..
I need info on how the throttle mechanism works.. I tdont appear to be functioning properly.???
