Buying 1999 500 4x4 Manual Trans - What do I look for?
#1
Is there anything I should look for? Common problems? Are there any weak points I should be aware of or maybe fix them before they break? Overall it seems to be a solid quad and the price is right ($1500) but I figured I'd ask here. I'm planning on using it to plow the driveway and do some moderate trail riding. Any recommendations on plow sizing for it? I was thinking a 60" would be ideal.
Thanks.
John

bushings , jack up the machine and check all the bushings front and rear. The shock bushings will probably be worn out. No big deal, they are cheap. If the swingarm bushings or a-arm bushings are bad that gets into some $.
While you've got the machine in the air take the time to look for frame damage underneath. Also check the front wheel bearings as well.
Check the foot shifter. Sometimes they will strip.
The brake master cylinders on the older cats are weak. Check the brake handle for any "spongy" feel.
The good thing is that the engines and drivetrain are pretty much bulletproof! They take ALOT of abuse and keep going.

Good post Junkman, I second what you have said.
60" plow should work great for you. Change oil often and keep your air filter clean. Read some post on here, there is some good advise in these forums.

While you have the thing up inthe air check your wheel bearings. A worn wheel bearing will puch the disk brake pad out while you ride from the wheel wobling. Then when you pull onthe brake handle it goes all the way to the handle bar and doesn't come up solid until the second or third pump.
It can be kind of frightning when going down a steep hill to have your brakes do this.

Thanks for the replies. Keep 'em coming. I checked all the bushings quickly on the ground by shaking it from side to side while feeling the swingarm, a-arm, and shock bushings. All of them felt tight. The frame was solid with only a few dents in the skid plate so I bought it. I got it for $1500 and the only thing that seems to be really wrong with it is that the speedo housing is missing. Other than that it just needs a good cleaning and I'll change all the fluids just for piece of mind. I've got a winch and a plow coming for it too. I'll check out those wheel bearings when I get it up on stands this week. Its been cold and snowy here since I got it then we got a half an inch of rain on top of that which froze up solid so I don't even want to think about working out in the shed.

I'll post some up once I get it washed and out of the shed. It's in pretty good shape even though the dealer said it needed TLC.
