Honda does not use a transfer case in its manual tranny machines. Instead, they just put on an ultra-low "granny" 1st gear. Achieves the same result, without the extra expense and weight of a trans case! I like the way they think!!!

The automatics mostly have transfer cases, because they need transfer cases.

I like the sub transmission,of the older 350 Big Bears and newer 400 Eigers?King Quads and ACs. You have TEN gear ratios to chose from rather than just five. With the super low 1st ONLY you can find your self in a situation where your screaming up a steep hill in first but you will bog in second while a true low range allows you to shift from super low 1st to super low 2nd and so on... You may want to pull that load up that steep hill but you want to get to the top some time today.

We had a old 87 Yamaha 250 moto 4 2wd and it had a low range which came in hany many times. I think Yamaha gave up on Sub trannies for cost saving.

My friends with belt drive auto trannies, seem to have to switch into low case fairly often. They have to stop at the bottom of big hills and do the old switcheroo, while I just charge right up....and wait for them at the top....

No doubt that "first" gear in the Rancher is low. I hardly ever use first gear on mine and almost always start off in second gear.
But drop her down in low with the 424 disengaged and you can ****** the front wheels off the ground.
