Which tires for desert riding?
#1
Soon to replace the stock tires. Most of my riding is desert / Mnts which means a variety conditions..loose, hard and medium pack soil. I try and avoid mud, or water crossing (If I can). Who's using what? Any suggestions?

We have had numerous different brands of tires in the last several years, and I think the best overall tires for desert terrain are the Bighorn radials, by Maxxis. The ITP Mud Lite XTR radials are also very good all around tires, that get better grip than the Bighorns in loose rocky covered ground, but tend to dig a little too good for pure sand. Those two tires are the best we've found so far.

have not tried them yet, but sounds like you should be looking at the bighorns. I'm looking right now too, and I will be getting radials. they are worth the extra (in some cases they are the same $).
edit - hey desertviper, how do you like your terrax?

Click on the camera icon under my user name, and you can see the typical desert conditions we ride in. As far as the Terracross tires go, I have mixed feelings about them. In the mountains where the ground surface is a mixture of different sized rocks that are very loose, and pretty much like riding on ball bearings, the Terracross tires are horrible. They just spin on the loose surface layer, and never bite in to get ahold of more solid ground underneath the loose surface rubble. But in the low desert where there is more sand and gravel, and on dirt roads, they work well. Their biggest strong point is how well they power slide. It is easy to drift corners at wide open throttle with the inside front tire a few inches off the ground, and the rear tires sliding out to the side, while being in perfect control the whole time. The Terracross tires are the best tires ever for power sliding, ... even better than Holeshot ATRs.

I can't find a picture of one of our Grizzlys with the Bighorns on it. We have a set of Bighorns, XTRs, Terracross, Mudzillas, and Skat Trak paddle tires. Both of our Grizzlys and the Rhino have the same bolt pattern, and I have swapped the tires back and forth frequently. The picture you saw was of my Grizzly with the 25" Terracross tires on it. Too bad I don't have a picture of the Grizzly with 26x12x12 paddles on all four corners, it looks bad to the bone (and will climb straight up in the sand). Here's a picture of my wife's Grizzly with the 27" XTRs on it.
