It really depends on your riding conditions, but I have always had K&N with good results. I've heard that if you ride in a lot of sand the Uni would be for you, otherwise the K&N would work great. There are people on here that are die hard Uni, then there are die hard K&N fans so it's really all in what you want.

^Ditto. The UNI is supposedly better in dusty conditions also. I run UNI's in all of my machines.

I am running a UNI, because they are cheaper to clean/replace.

Which filter you choose is up to you. Personally I won't put anything other than a k&n in mine, because you can run them with an outerwears prefilter which repels water, mud, and a lot of the dust, and lets you go a lot longer between cleanings.

Regardless of if you choose a foam filter or a gauze one like k&n, steer clear of that stock filter system. There are just too many flaws with it, which can easily let dirt and junk into your engine unless everything is done perfectly (and then it's still not a great seal and can still let crap in). Get a pro-design clamp-on filter kit, and you won't have to worry about getting the filter and lid put on in perfect alignment any more. You won't have to rely on the airbox lid holding the filter in position, you will just have a aluminum flange in your airbox that the filter slides onto and tightens down with a hose clamp. You can still use your airbox lid if you want to, but most of us eliminate the airbox lid to get better airflow into the engine. If you do leave the lid off, you will need to rejet though, or you will be running lean, possibly lean enough to cause engine damage. It's at least a couple horsepower gain though.
