Default honda trx 300 'one way clutch'

Hey motorheads,
Tell me anything you know about the one way clutch on a honda 300trx. I know its not supposed to turn counterclockwise in the outer housing, but what makes it grab the housing? I dont want to buy another one if this one is not defective. Without the clutch assembly in place and the one way clutch resting in the outerhousing as shown in the manual, I can turn the one way clutch in either direction. If I place the clutch assembly in place in the outer housing, the clutch assembly will not turn counter clockwise. This seems correct to me but goes against the manual. What do you think?

Flip it around? Usually there is a marking which shows which way is out.
It spins one way and not the other, because the rollers inside, are ecentrics, and freewheel one way, and lock the other.

Thanks for the reply hondabuster. I have it installed with the 'outside' mark facing up. When the manual says it should not turn counter clockwise, is it talking about the whole clutch assembly when installed into the outer clutch or just the one way clutch inside the outerhousing without the clutch assembly installed. I think Im understanding that you are saying that the one way clutch will spin inside the outer housing, but when the clutch assembly is installed into the one way clutch that the whole assem. will not turn counter clockwise. I hope I'm making sense. Thanks!
