I have a friend who just bought a '98 Bayou 300 4x4 and doesn't have a manual. I've owned mostly two strokes, so does this thing have a oil filter? What's the oil capacity? Is there a sight glass for level check? What oil do you recommend? Thanks!

The first thing I'd recommend is for your friend to buy a manual.

Oil capacity is 1.7 liter (older models) to 2.2 liter (newer models).

Use anything from 10W-30 to 20W-50.

A sight gauge tells the tale; however: oil level must be checked ONLY after the Bayou has sat dormant long enough for the oil to drain into the sump. The oil pump will "disappear" the oil in the sump visible through the sight glass when the engine is running; it takes a long time for the oil to drain back down to get a true reading when at rest.

Yes, it has a disposable paper oil filter.

2.2 liters. Filter found inside case near front of rear brake foot lever. Two screws removes cover, pull paper element put make sure O-ring comes out, too. New filters are cheaper at Autozone than at a dealer. About half price. Monitor sight glass after circulating new oil to be sure of correct amount. The Bayou is an older designed machine but is extremely tough.
