I just did a full rebuild on my daughters quad and it wouldn't start. I cranked on it 3 times for about about 15 seconds each. And then it wouldn't turn anymore. I pulled the plug and smelled gas. I cranked on it with the plug out and the gieser of gas actually hit the garage ceiling. I had crossed the lines from the petcock and filled the motor with gas.

I cranked on it until just a mist was coming out. turned the choke off and tried to start it again. No cough, no sputter, nothing. I am getting spark and obviuosly I am getting compression. Is it still just flooded or what? Anyone else done this? What do I need to do now?

Just for info sake I bored it over one size milled .030" off of the head and disconnected the oil pump. New bearings, belt, and gaskets. Everything else is back how I got it.

yep still flooded. dry or put a new plug in and leave choke off.pull or pinch gas line off to make sure no more gas can get into the motor. wide open throttle. and crank. it will pass more air through and dry out inside motor and once its dryenough in the motor it will start and sputter and die. now put or unpinch line and fire it up . should fix the problem.

and you will like the 30thou off the head. really makes it pull

I got it going, thanks! I rolled that thing out to the garage door to try to help vent all of that gas. After a couple of cranks with the lines pinched off it sputtered a bit just like you said. I opened the lines up again and got it started but only turning really slow (and eerily quiet too) and as soon as I could get the revs up I was trated to another shower of raw gas out of the exhaust. I mean from the garage door all the way to the workbench on the back wall at about 18" width. I had to have gone through a quart of gas between the two spouts.I shoulda took a picture of it. Anyway it runs great now and I've got a really clean spot in my garage. Thanks again.

 

do yourself a favor and put a secondary shutoff inline . if your petcock is broke it will fill your crankcase every time you let it sit. get a shut off from a place that fixes lawnmowers to be safe
