Default Advice for more low end power

Hey guys i need some advice this past weekend i went out riding on my 250 sport Jet. I meet some other guy that had a 450R Honda and we started riding together hitting the dunes. I live in TX and here there are some good places to ride well anyways we were going through all types of terrain from soft dirt to rough hard dirt. The Jet did alright but i had some problems with the hills that had real soft dirt.

I was wondering if there is a way to get better power in the low end gears cause that the type of riding thats done out here. Also i was wondering if it lowering the throttle speed would help me out at all? And what would be the recommended setting of the screw if i was going to do that type of riding?

I also wanted to know if the tires that come with the Jet are designed for rocky or mud terrains and not for soft sand? Thanks in advance guys and i would appreciate anyones help.

Your never going to keep up with as 450R.

Do you have the larger jets? What size sprocket is on the engine?

Try lowering the tire pressure to 2psi and see how it does in the sand.

Thanks for responding i was hopping you would see this post cause you really know these machines really good. Well i know i wont keep up with the 450 and on some hills i had some trouble but my little 250 wouldnt do to bad cause these are some good hills but the sand is really soft i would get almost to the top but then i would get stuck. John did send me the larger jets and there installed. I did have PSI at around 5 thats what both of us had ours at. is it better to adjust the PSI in soft dirt or on concrete before yo ride? Another beginner question is how would i know what the sprocket size is? So whats the recommended adjustment on the throttle screw? Would that help at all?

With the larger jets the fuel screw (the one on the bottom of the carb) should be set around 1 1/2 turns out.

It doesnt matter where you are when you adjust the pressure. But the quad wont feel as stable on pavement anymore. In the sand going from 5 to 2 will be a improvement. The quad wont sink into the sand as much.

You would have to remove the cover on the side of the engine and count teeth. I will guess you have the 15 tooth sprocket and might want the 14 for the riding you do.

i cant remember exactly how many turns out the fuel screw is but i will screw it back in all the way and the do the correct adjustment you recommended. I think i also have the 15 tooth sprocket as well cause i believe the newest quads were coming out like that. And i just got mine in Dec. 2007.

So i guess theres no real adjustment on throttle? Is there anything i can do to get better performance and power? Is there a way to make the muffler a little quieter?

Take a little off the head to raise the compression.

balanis03,
I am running a 15 in the front and a 46 tooth in the back and I really like that combo for my 250.Seems to give me a good balance of power.

Yes if yours is a Dec model you have the 15 tooth sprocket. You can order a 14 from Jetmoto. Raceway only had the 15 last time I asked.

Not unless you have so much play you arent really getting full throttle. Is there a lot of play in the thumb lever?

If you take the muffler apart and pack it tighter with insulation you can get it quieter than stock. Stock the packing is very limited.

Well i counted the tooths on the back sprocket and it has a 42 tooth sprocket. So would i be better off with a 46 tooth in the back for some better handling for the riding im going to be doing? what type of grease do you guys recommend to lube the chain? For the throttle lever it does have some play in it. It moves about 1/2 inch before the throttle even gives it gas not sure if thats normal? i have the throttle screw out about 1/2 an inch. I was playing with the screw while i was to see what was giving me the best performance and left it at that but next time i need to play with it again cause i kind of did it a little late in the day. So you can may be get the insulation from the local cycle shop to make muffler a little more quieter?

1/2" is to much free play, you probably arent getting full throttle. So you arent ever getting all the engines power. There is a adjuster in the throttle cable that will allow you to eliminate that. Mine are adjusted with almost no free play. For my mufflers I use house insulation but you can get some from the motorcycle shop. Kinda expensive though. The 46 tooth sprocket will increase your low end power but your top speed will drop.
