#1
Which one would be best for me? I mainily ride trails I jump a little and do lots of hillclimbing. Which one climbs better? If I got the 400 and got a pipe and clutch kit would it blow a stock 500 away?

Stock, they are made to run as close to each other as possible. The 400 is lighter & more nimble, while the 500 has more 'grunt'.
Pipe the 400, and it becomes a whole different ball game.
You could spend the money saved on the 400 for mods that would leave the 500s eating your dust, and not be out any more cash than getting a 500.

If you like to tinker and play with your quads in between riding weekends, get the 400. If all you want to do is is put gas in it and change the oil, get the 500.
The 400 is infinitely more modifyable, and each modifdication yields gratifiying results.
A pipe and clutch kit is normally the first mod on a 400, and the difference is night and day. Just be careful, horsepower is addictive. The 400 with a pipe & clutch kit will smoke a 500
