Default sprocket gear ratio

Hi I have a 1998 polaris 400L sport i have just had teh trans aprart and while i was puttnig it back together i noticed teh sprocket is a lil warn so i figured i would change it what is a good gear ratio that people have found that worked good. it has a 39 on there now. I think i have a 40 somewere but i don't whant to loose any bottom end. how would a 38 work i hit over 70 mph on this atv already stock with stock tires. how much top end speed would i loose? i can't reely go that fast around hear in sussex county NJ anyway i only can up in upstate ny. I am prob gonna put my 24 inch dirt devils on there to it now has 22 inch stock tires.

thanks for the help.
