82 honda 110 just wont start
#1
hey all you ATC mechanics
I have this 110 that was given to me, this atc hasnt been running in about 15 years, the carb was in pretty bad shape, i found a good deal on a new one put that on, i have a new plug, put new oil in it, the engine has compression, lifters arent stuck, good spark, the pull cord is shot, so ive been trying to use a drill to start it (dont know whether that is a good thing or not), and this thing just wont get goin... once and a while ill be able to get a pop, but just no consistancy...
I dont know if this has anything to with it .. but the gas tank rusted a hole through it so im trying to fix that, so i have that off, and have two long gas lines that i fill up attached to the handle bars and the carb seems like it gets enough gas with that.
Any one have any ideas what i could try next,
Any help will be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks,

Are you sure the drill motor is spinning the motor in the correct direction?
Are you sure, gas is making it to the combustion chamber? Pilot jet plugged? If you had a rusty tank...chances are itll make its way into the carb, if you dont have an in line fuel filter on it.
How did you determine compression? Gauge?
If you find low compression, try adding a few drops of 2 stroke motor oil in the spark plug hole. Itll help seal the rings, and raise compression, and itll burn off easier than 4 stroke oil. Its amazing how well that trick works.
If that doesnt help, check the valve adjustment. If the intake valve is too tight ( not enough clearance), itll lead to low compression, and hard starting.
Like you said...you have spark and fuel, all that is left is timing, and compression.

Yep, triple checked that i was spinnin it the right way.
The gas is definetly makin it in there, the whole carb is new, i noticed on the old carb that every possible hole was clogged, tryed soaking it and everything, so i just bought a whole new one.
As far as the compression goes, when im turnin the motor over i put my hand over the intake and it made a pretty good vaccuum, i might just get a gauge and get an exact reading,
When it comes to the valve adjustment ill mess with that either tonight or tomarrow, and ill let you know how it goes.
Thank you!!

i would fix the pull start, it will make it a little easier. Mine also had a badly rusted tank when I got it. I ran mine off a fuel line and funnel just to make sure it ran. Now I have a plastic tank. If you want to make sure its not electrical or compression, just take out the plug and spray about "2 seconds" or less of starting fluid/carb cleaner into the cylinder and quickly put the plug back in and try to start it. It should run for about 3-5 seconds. I usually do this to make sure the electrical system is working properly and that there is a sufficient amount of compression to make it run. Then if it fires up for a bit if you do that, then look towards the fuel system for your problem. If it won't start still, then it will probably be an electrical or compression problem. Also, just because a part is new, doesn't mean it's going to work right. good luck with it!
