Default PLEASE HELP 2001 500 HO SPORTSMAN ONLY 3 WHEEL DRIVE

on the right front side it will not engage. i have replaced the hub coil and it is magnetized like it is supposed to be but will still not engage. i have had three mechanics work on it and no one can figure out what the problem is. we have even taken the other side apart to see if everything is the same and evrything is identical. i don't know what else to do. any ideas??

hi,here is the thing, extreme tolerance, the diff between the inner pole+the outer pole should be 1 thou or less, not a thou+a half not two or tree or so! what i,m getting at is if the measure is at all over a thou IT WILL NOT WORK WELL,it needs to be less, or what i do that does not require a thou feeler guage is 0,put a staightedge across both poles+tap the outer sleave(pole) CAREFULLY!! with a soft hammer with a rag wrapped around the head, evenly around the sleave till you close the gap,i did it with the silicone already dried+it just bulged out some.AGAIN CAREFULLY+EVENLY!!! you don't want to chip or burr the surface.400 grit wet will smooth it.

I have also gotten a bad coil once, cross the right to left at the terminal board and see if it works , like mekanic says they need to be tight on clearance too.

are you talking about the cover that goes over the coil?? i'm not sure where you are talking about but this may very well be the problem. i put on the new coil onto the hubstrut then installed the metal cover over top of the coil. the seal on the back of the hub rides on it.

yeah, the sleave that fits over the strut is the outerdiameterpole,(coil) the innerdiameterpole is on the axle.did you set the clearance clarence?? lay a straightedge over both the circle on the axle+the circle sleave you installed+close the space between the two-CARFULLY.

If your clearance is set right on the magnetic poles, and you are getting magnetism, try switching the hub from the left side (not the guts, just the hub) - if the right side now works, and the left doesn't, then you need to replace the hub it's self. We've seen a few over the years that have worn to the point that the hillard clutch will not grab the hub anymore.... This same process of elimination applies to the hillard clutches too - switch them from the side that works to the side that doesn't and see what the results are. Just make sure if you are doing the process of elimination, you need to make only 1 change at a time so that you know what change makes the difference.

Remember, torque on the axle nut is important for proper AWD engagement - - 10 to 12 ft/lbs is the required amount.

okay i set the poles to exactly flush and put it back together. still no 4wd on that side. it looks like there are some small metal particals in the oil on that side. the bearings look and feel great and everything seems to be in order. i will try to torque the nut down and see what happens tomorrow and go from there. thanks for the help i'll let you know what happens then.
