Have a 2006 Grizzly 660. Was doing some maintenance on it and went to start it. Started right up.
Shut it off and went to start it back up and saw sparks coming from the relays and little fuse box area
in the rear fenders next to the battery. (had the seat off at the time)

Now when I turn the key the dash comes on but when I flip the red start switch to on the dash turns off.
Was a slight ticking sound at first, now nothing.



Any ideas or info would be greatly appreciated. What did I fry and how?

check your fuses

 

Checked and double checked all the fuses I could see. Even replaced with new ones. Have a manual but its at work.
Are there any other fuses that are 'hidden'?

Just got the quad about 2 weeks ago. Have taken it out about 5 times already and has ran perfect. Compared to my little prairie 300 this thing is a rocket.

 

well arcing and sparking isnt a good sign at all,if you still have your other bike swap battries and see whats what from there,the ticking sound happens with a bad battery,and will stop ticking when the battery is gone all the way,just takes one bad cell,and will also account for the dash display fading,but doesnt account for any of the sparking you speak of

if you used a car battery charger at any time it can warp the plates in the battery,thats straght from my local tech ,other than that you need them to run a diagnostics to see what/if anything fried

 

I took the battery out and put a charger on it. Said the battery was fully charged. Guess it could be bad?
Yea, the whole sparking issue has me kinda worried that something fried. I'll swap the batteries and go from there.

i fried a battery using a car battery charger,the Yamaha tech told me you will/can get away with it but it will damage the plates and decrease the batterys life ,and the more you charge it the more damage it incurs

he said they use a specific charger for the batteries

hopefully you just toasted your battery,and all else will be fine,good luck

I put the charger on it after the problems started just to see if it had a charge.

A lot of time, seeing sparks on a DC voltage system means you have a dirty/loose connection at the point where sparks occur (unless it is a direct short). Judging by the location you saw the sparks, I would tend to say that your connections at the starter solenoid (relay) are in question - especially since Yamaha uses the starter solenoid as the source of power to the quads electrical system (vs. others that use the battery connection).

Try cleaning/tightening your cable connections at the starter solenoid and see if this solves your problem.

 

Figured it out. The sparks were coming from the starter relay (pic in gallery). It looked as though the little black boots that cover the terminals werent pressed all the way down. I put a zip tie around them to hold them in place better and the quad fired right up and didnt have a problem when I took it out sunday for a leisurely 4 hr romp through the mud.

So this leads to another question. Should the relay even jump sparks from one terminal to the other even if the rubber boots werent there? Is this a sign of the relay going bad? To much voltage going through it? Should it be replaced?
