Default Polaris 400 counterbalancer mark orientation ??

My counterbalancer gear has two different marks out by the teeth .( the crank gear is fine)

One is a nice round dot. but it's centered with the outer point of a gear tooth, not aligned with the inner "V" between 2 teeth like the manual shows .

The other mark is kind of a crappy looking rectangular punch mark, but it IS centered between 2 teeth, punched at the base of the " V".

The 2 dots on the inner part (aligning the gear and the counterbalancer weight) are matched up fine.

SO...

With the counterbalancer installed, and allowed to spin freely, the heavy balance weight side falls to the bottom, and the 2 INNER alignment marks are at the 6 O'clock position. The round outer mark is at 3 O'clock and the rectangular outer mark is at between 10 and 11'O'clock.

WHICH IS RIGHT ??

Looking at the counter balancer - with the round to your right and flat to your left, water pump shaft away from you, the mark you are looking for should be between the 7th and 8th tooth, starting from the geartooth in line with the straight edge of the flat.

It is easier to look at this than describe, so I hope this makes sense

Sorry but cant get your description . How can you have the water pump shaft pointing AWAY from you and still see any marks ? That would be the back side of the gear.i have the balancer installed and can't see the "back" now

please try this, hold the big gear in your hand, water pump shaft pointing right at your nose . 2 innermost alignment dots down at 6 'oclock position.

Now where is your outer mark at ? 3'Oclock or 10 O'clock ?

Can i post a pic here ??

The problem is that there is no real reference from the outside - I have 3 of these balancer shafts in my hands, and each one has the "puller" holes (the only physical, outside references other than the timing mark) in different positions - BUT, the timing mark is still in the same relation to the flat of the balance shaft - therefore the description with the balancer out.

The "innermost marks" you are referring, must be where someone has replaced the large bearing on the balance shaft (these are not factory issue) - so who knows where they made these marks at - I always mark mine in line with the timing mark on the gear, but you don't know where who-ever put these at..........

HHmm. I've had 3 of these balancers apart now and all 3 have had the 2 small dimples. One on the inner most center hub of the gear and a mating one right next to it on the balancer. I'm going to take a picture of it and try to post it or email it to you.

ok, holding the balancer by the bearing, front of gear facing you, water pump shaft facing you .bob weight hanging down so "flat" is across, like the horizon.

wheres the timing mark now ?

I HAVE PICTURES NOW !! CAN I SEND THEM TO SOMEONE ??

From the left side of the gear, using the Front side of the tooth that the Back side lines up with the flat edge (I used a straight edge to point the tooth out, and these are "curved gears", so front and back are not in line) go UP - mark will be between 7th & 8th tooth.
Once you find the mark, you may want to ping it out with a center punch to make the mark more noticeable for next time......
