Default Electrical system

Just rejoined forum in time to ask simple question about son's Foreman 500 (2006). After rain 2 nights ago (Foreman was tarped) couldn't get started. Put charger to battery, and after charged to 100% (was at 60) started up. 20 seconds after disconnecting charger 4wd indicator started flashing, Foreman kicked out of 4wd, and wouldn't start after turning off. After charging and with charger on will start, otherwise no joy. Will start with pull rope.
Disconnected charger while running and measured system voltage at 8.5v at stator wire going into regulator and same at exit of regulator. When off battery voltage reads 12.4-12.7.
How do I get to the stator to look closely at it?
Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jim

The stator is at the rear of the engine to service it you have to either remove the swingarm or remove the engine .. Here are the tests for the charging system ..

Thank you for the troubleshoot info. Did it, verified all charge system parts aok, then wife suggested disconnecting winch (a true mechanic's daughter). Voila, problem solved.
