400ex smokes at start

400ex smokes at start

My 99 Honda 400ex smokes at when I start it for about a minute or two. Do I need to rebuild the whole motor or can I just rebuild one part. Any advice would be great. Thanks

is it gettin to much gas or is the smoke oil?
i have the same quad and it smokes oil and i have to rebuild the engine( the piston, piston rings, bearings, and gasket kit.)

smells like smoke, but it only does is for about 20 seconds after i first start it, kind of weird, i figured it would do it the whole time it was running if the motor needed to be rebuilt

Probably valve guides and seals. Time to send the head in for a rebuild. While it's in the shop have it ported too for some more power.

it could be the valves, but if it is when you take the head off then also look at the piston and piston rings if you can see a dark spot on the piston( oil going through) then you will want a new piston to.
