'01 Big Bear 400 4x4 with bad steering problem
#1
I was riding in a "pond" bed and I made a sharp left uturn (fully turned the wheel) and heard a loud pop like something came out in the steering. My left side outer boot has been torn for some time but I was told that not having it there wouldnt hurt it too badly. However, shortly after the uturn it started snatching harder and harder to the left. It seemed like something locked it left, but if you pushed it back it'd snap and turn back straight. Will not jerk if making a right turn. Only straight or left. Upon examination, found that there are 2 missing bearings. I've no idea whether I can replace them or not. Made a loud scraping noise.
Front left shock and left rim were badly damaged by someone who stole it recently. Bent the rim back but didnt notice the frozen shock until I was looking into the boot. I dont know whether the transfer of weight into just the steering would've caused this or not. I do hit bumps hard...
Any suggestions as to the problems and possible solutions would help greatly. And if anyone knows like an ATV salvage yard or anything in N. Florida where you could give me a number or something that'd help. I cant afford a 150~ halfshaft or brand new *set* of shocks.
Thanks Ya'll.

sounds like to me that you have busted your cv shaft. missing bearnings is why it has a snap when turning, the bearings are in a bind and then become free. you can change the whole shaft or just the outer part and the boot. when ordered it comes with instructions on how to install it. the best way i found is to get the shaft out, and work with it on a bench of table, no special tools are needed other than regular hand tools. check out GORILLA-AXLE.com look under rebuild kits
