Default new guy needing advice

ok i'm new to the whole ATV scene, I mean i've had some freinds back home that have them but untill now never really looked t one for myself.

but here's the catch.. i'm planning on making it street legal.. i know how (as far as physically) but i want a 4 wheeler that can keep up with my buddy's bikes. or at least fast enough to turn heads.

i don't get scared easy.. something the military did for me.. and i'm actually a driver for the military so i'm pretty good with controlling what i'm driving on or off road.

but i also don't want to be paying out my a$$ for it.

i know i want an aluminum frame and plastic body peices.. which are typical of racing quads.. i'd like something that i can work on though.. something with potential so as i get more comfortable with it i can build it faster.

um ok i think that's enough info.. any ideas everyone??

oh btw i'm new.. 22.. and an adrenaline freak

I'm not a big fan of the Yamaha Raptor 700, but I think it might fit your requirements. Go to the Yamaha web site and the Yamaha forum in here, to find out more about it.

The 450's are hot and very light, but those engines are high strung and not as well suited to the constant speed of the street. I don't think they would be as good a choice.

Whatever you pick, you will want to widen it and lower it, kind of like a TT setup.

I will second the Raptor suggestion. If you must have streetbike or headturning speed, then slap a turbo kit on after lowering it and setting it up properly, should be pretty fast. Of course tho I don't think ANY quad will equal a streetbike, if you are talking about something like the 600cc+ superbikes.

If you want to make an ATV street-legal you need to see if it's even possible to do so in your state. It's not in mine. On some with a SRA you can custom make a new swing arm with a single wheel. With 3 wheels instead of 4, it's a motorcycle in some states. Google "3-wheel ATVs" to see it.
