So after looking at all the replies from everyone Ive chosen the scrambler over the 400ex. But now I have a bigger decision to make. the 400 or the 500 2 or 4 stroke. I am a trail rider skinny or wide I like them all. Mud however thats another story. Maybee once in a while I will venture into a small mud hole and play a while. But this is usually avoided. Mostly I like to go out on a trail and just get on it for a while. then I venture to the skinny loops for a little more challenge. I like the speed the scrambler400 does about 60mph stock so Ive heard. Thats enough speed for me. I really dont need the 4 wheel drive. I dont climb that much, would be nice for the snow though. SO all you polaris fans out there tell me a story. Is the 400 or the 500 right for me. what do you own and whats your preference.

 

Get the 400. I have the 99 Sport, predecessor of the 2X4 Scrambler. You will want to modify the machine once you get used to it. The 400 is easier, and cheaper to modify.

 

i had the same decision to make....ex or scrambler....then 400 or 500??? i chose 500 cuz i will use it for hunting and fishing and the 4 stroker is better suited for low end grunt..although the 400 would work! the 400 feels faster and is to a point and easier to modify! in the back of my mind i just feel 4 strokes are more reliable. tough decision and you will be happy either way!

 

For the type of riding that you described I would say get the 400.

 

if you do decide on the 400 which is a very good choice i love mine, you had better get busy because 2000 was the last year!!! if you cant find one you will most likely be sol!!

 

Are you mechanically inclined?
Are you a "wrench?"
Do you do your own automotive repair when possible?
Do you like to tweak and tinker with mechanical devices?

If you can answer yes to all of the above questions buy the 400, if not the 500 will be a better choice for you.

 

I like the 400 maybe because I have one, It'll do about 67 to 70 mph plus with the $500 extended warrenty I have no worries for 5 years.

 

Based on your description of how you ride, get the 400. Not as versatile as the 500 4x4, but if you won't use it, don't buy it.

As you can see below I have the 400 which I prefer over the less snappy 500. If you get the 400, for only an aditional $300, for a HPD pipe/clutch kit & ritter racing modified air box, you would be getting the biggest bang for the buck in improvement you could imagine. It's the best money you'll every spend since it really wakes up the 400. It will run MUCH better than stock & you can still putt & crawl around slow if you want.
