Default How to tell if a quad is 2 or 4 stroke

I was given an Eton viper 90r from a person that lost the manuel to the bike. The guy couldn't tell me for sure if the quad is a 2 or 4 stroke and he also wasn't sure what year the bike is either. I am fairly certain the year of the quad is an 03, 04, or 05. How can I get this information?

Look for and oil reservoir tank, or look at the carb and see if you see a small oil tube running to it. If it's an 04 or earlier, it's a 2 stroke. Cant say for sure if 05 or 06 was the last year they put those out as a smoker.

theres a ton of ways

1. does it sound like more like a weed whacker or more like a motor cycle

what does the exhaust pipe look like ... is it just a straight pipe?
if so its 4 stroke, if it flares out after the header, and than narrows again before the
muffler, its a 2 stroke.

is there oil injection? or , do you have to mix oil in the gas?

DOES IT TAKE OIL IN THE ENGINE LIKE A CAR
if so its a 4,

this is just the start

The 2 stroke will have a plastic covering over the cylinder and the 4 stroke will not. The 4 stroke should have a metal circle on each side of the head as well. Like the post above said, if it has an oil tank in front of where the battery is it's a 2 stroke. I might be wrong but I don't think Eton made a 90 4 stroke during those years. I know they switched over in 06 or 07 because of emissions. The exhaust pipe on the 2 stroke doesn't flare hardly at all, it is pretty much a straight pipe all the way back to the silencer.

no kidden, thats too bad, because thats called the expansion chamber on a 2 stroke, and it must lack power pretty severely if it doesnt have that

If you have mosquitos in your yard = four stroke

No mosquitos = 2 stroke

I agree kukerdan and some go so far as to add a restrictor in the pipe as well. I guess they are designed to be a starter quad and don't need more than what they have. On our Eton we cut the restrictor out and hawged the silencer out as well. It made a difference but not much except for the noise.
