I am 21 yrs old and new to the sport, having just started about a year ago on a new Blaster, but I have caught on fast and recently bought an race ready '87 250r with all the mods. The quad is great and I love it but I am planning on racing and it needs some tuning. I am having the 4 year old shocks rebuilt and working on the handling qualities, but I am filing plugs like a ****. Now I know that 2 strokes file plugs very often but this is rediculous. When I trail ride with friends I have to take 2 extra plugs with me and more often than not I end up using those 2 extras. I have tried to jet the bike a little better but with no luck, and it has no low or mid range power. I have a fmf fatty pipe and silencer and know that it is a high end pipe. I am also running a high comp. piston and a cool head with a 19 cc dome on it. I think my mixture might be too rich because the filed plugs are black. I am mixing 5 gallons with one container of oil(whatever that ratio is) and I am also mixing in a octane booster to get it above 100 octane. Please help a 250r virgin. If I cant get the bike tuned I cant race it. Any other ideas as to what might need adjusted, I will listen to anything at this point. Thanks for reading this book of mine.

you should be mixing at 32:1 ratio, you sound like your at 20:1, also, what size main jet do you have, you can drop the needle a position, and go up on the main jet, be very careful with the needle, it can lean it out and blow your motor though. what size and kind of carb do you have?

If you're fouling plugs that often it most likely is A)jetting (try going down 1 size on the main jet), B) needle setting (try moving the clip on the needle), C) fuel mixture (I run Golden Spectro at 50:1 for dirt, 40:1 for sand), D) not enough air (hope you have an aftermarket air filter, if not, get one and open up the airbox), and E) you could be "lugging" the motor too much.
An FMF Fatty is a low-end/mid-range pipe (I have them on both R's in my garage).
Buy a Clymer's manual. It will help a lot.
Finally, there's a great site where someone that's a lot smarter than I am can help you and it's dedicated 100% to the greatest quad ever, the 250R. Go to http://pub20.ezboard.com/bhondatrx250r

I trail ride and hill climb in the mountains of East TN.I run #9 plug and have never had one foul yet. I have been mixing oil at 20:1. with no problems.gonna try 32:1 next time out. Also get a good oil mixture measuring cup.Got mine at the Honda shop. They are worth thier weight.. in ounces..
