2002 Honda 400ex will crank but dies out when throttled
#1
Having problem with my 400ex guys, can't figure it out. I think it's my coil but not sure, checked plug for fire and got a little, just not sure how much to look for. cranks fine and idles fine but when I give it throttle even a little, it's wants to die and does. Not sure what resistance the coil should have in ohms, and not sure how to check it. I think the coil is failing under a load cause it runs sometimes and after about 3-4 minutes of hauling butt, it does dies after throttled. Thorougly cleaned carb twice and blew jets out with air. Drained fuel tank and cleaned and added HEET fuel treatment just in case of water, changed sparkplugs, How much volts AC does CDI put out, How many ohms should a good coil have? HELP?

thanks so much, I measured the coil just like you said on my 250ex and my 400ex with which i'm having problems with the 400ex.
on the 250EX
ground to primary = .5 OHMS
ground to secondary (or with plug cap) = 7.5 K OHMS
GOOD i'm sure!!!
on the 400EX (This is the bike i'm having problems with)
ground to primary = 1 to 1.2 OHMS
ground to secondary (or with plug cap) = 19.3 to 19.8 K OHMS
NOT SURE IF THAT IS A GOOD READING FOR THE SECONDARY OR NOT....
I DID TAKE MY CARBURATOR BACK OFF THIS MORNING TO SOAK IT IN A CARBURATOR CLEANER AND NOTICED WHEN I DISMANTLED IT, GAS AND WATER CAME OUT OF THE BOWL. I'VE TAKEN THE CARB APART TWICE BEFORE DURING THE WEEK AND CLEANED IT AND THE JETS, AND BLEW IT OUT WITH AIR AND TOOK THE FUEL TANK OFF AND DRAINED IT AND CLEANED IT OUT W FRESH GAS AND THEN DRIED IT WITH AIR AND REPLACE WITH FRESH FUEL, I WILL PUT CARB BACK ON AFTER IT SOAKS A WHILE AND PUT COIL BACK ON AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS, CAN'T FIGURE OUT WHERE THE WATER CAME FROM, IT KIND OF FRIGHTENS ME TO THINK I'VE BEEN PUTTING BAD GAS IN THE FUEL TANK, JUST BOUGHT THE FUEL YESTERDAY. MAN OLE MAN. THANKS FOR YOUR SPECS HondaMechanic.....Great Help, just not sure about the secondary resistance readings on the coil.....
