Oil Change on 2007 Polaris Sportsman 500 x2
#1
Hello out there! My wife called the Polaris shop (where I bought the 2007 sportsman 500 x2) to ask about getting its first oil change. I've been an auto tech for years, but new to ATV's so I figured what the heck..it's new..I'll just let them change the oil. But changed my mind when she said it would cost 180 Dollars!!! (something about the first time costing more?!) Has anyone else heard this? Is there something "special" they have to do? I read that you drain oil plug, drain crankcase, and change filter..also it says to replace oil plug gaskets, I think. I thought I saw a video on youtube a while back of a guy changing oil on an sporstman like mine. Any ideas where to get the oil kit, etc??? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

lol, the dealership wanted $130 from me, and the service manager said you can do it yourself. He said the main reason for the first time oil change is so that if warranty issues occur later on, they can see that you had it maintained to a point. And sinc i have an extended 5yr warranty he said it would be helpful. The other option would be to buy the oil change kit from the dealer and keep the receipt in case of further warranty issues.

Yea, I feel silly asking how to do an oil change, lol. But it would be great to see a video of someone changing the oil on a 2007 Sportsman 500 x2. It seems really easy, yet the dealership charges so much and I guess that's what scares me. Is there anything special to do?....Is it easy to drain the wrong plug? lol If anyone has a link to a video or some more detailed info into oil change I would appreciate it! Thanks!

ASK ONLY for breakin service which is oil and filter change,check/clean pre and main air filter, top off coolant, visual check of cv boots, and trans, front gearcase level check! I charge $37.50 plus parts, little over $65 for atv's and rangers!! I even reset wrench! Not a good way to establish a good customer base, but not all dealers alike! Warranty issue ONLY if machine looks like never been serviced,low/very dirty oil, trashed air filter and such! Owners can do themselves,we have never tried to influence them one way or the other! Good luck

I really appreciate the replies to my post. I feel stupid because I forgot to ask the main thing I was wondering about. The ATV only has about 250 miles, but it hit 50 hours and the wrench light on the odometer is flashing. It flashes 10 times when I first turn on the key. I figured it was a diagnostic light that pops on at 50 hours. The oil looks fine and shows full. Does anyone know if the light will automatically go off when I service it? Or is that even what the wrench-light blinking means? The ATV cranks and seems to run fine. Thanks again everyone!

The dealer should have set the wrench to 25 hrs for first oil change. From factory they are set at 50 hrs. After changing oil, have machine in neutral, key off, hold button for about 6 seconds, turn on ignition while still holding button, will be in diagnostic mode, toggle till you see and hour glass with wrench, hold button again, willtun to off,let up button, wrench will flash, let up again and will count all the way up to 250 hrs. Stop at 50 or 100 max, wait until hours chosen stops flashing, then will be set. Wont flash again until count down. ANYWAY this is in your manual! Please read, most people dont. Good luck.

Thank you very much, I read the manual when I first bought it and remembered something about resetting Diagnostics, I was just about to go look through it again when you replied. Thanks again!
