Hi, I have an 05 Sportman 500 HO. My battery died recently and I have been having trouble with starting it. It works with the pull start but not with the key. I charged the battery and have tried starting with a boost, the only thing I get is it sounds like started isn't engaging all the way. Similar to the sound a car makes when having the key turned on when it is already running. I'm guessing either a new battery might help or a new solenoid may do the trick. Help please.

 

Try a new battery and clean all the connections at the battery and selenoid, I've seen the selenoid connections do this.

did you say the starter is running but not engauging the flywheel to turn motor over? if this is correct then i would say you need to remove starter drive and clean/lube it
