Default WINCH QUESTIONS

A lil info first. 07 500 HO x2 deluxe on 27 inch mud lite xtrs and 14 inch type 7 wheels. I am going to replace my winch cable with synthetic and was wondering if any of yall have done this and might have some info such as the best kind , size and length. Also if there are any tips for doing this. I am a cat service tech so skills and tooling shouldn't be a prob. Thanks for your help

I had that rope stuff on my 02 400, it was cool, and if it got frayed, you coould cut a chunk off and your ready to go. The hard part is getting the end of the rope inside itself. Its a self locking "knot". I'm sure it comes with the instructions with the rope. I will get some more for my new wheeler but I will wait till the cable i have gets wrecked.

I don't have synthetic yet but have read about it and like what I hear. If your fairlead is gouged from wire rope and you switch to synthetic, it can get torn up. A new hawse, not roller, fairlead will save your rope. You can get several extra feet of synthetic on a drum, like 75 feet instead of 50. If you use your winch for plowing it won't wreck a synthetic cable like it can steel.

Put the Warn synthetic rope kit on my SP 500's Warn 2.5ci. I got the kit from Royal Distributing. Comes with 50 feet of 3/16 rope and a new roller fairlead.
I like it for handling it, no sharp parts, but it snapped after the 4th time I plowed with my Glacier plow. So it's still not the answer for plowing. It is neater to repair than cable though. Also it tends to freeze on the drum in the winter. It gets wet from the heat when using the winch constantly plowing, then freezes together when you park it. Sometimes you have to manually pull it back out when you go to plow the next day.
Don't know if I'll buy it again? I like it, but not sure if it's woth the $125.00 I paid for it versus $40.00 for the steel cable.

I plowed all winter with mine and didn't break the rope unit the end of the season when the rope started to get frayed. A quick trim of the rope and a new knot and I was good to go. I have the hawse fairlead but see that all the kits have a roller so I'm wondering if my rope would last longer if I went with a roller?

Everything I've read about the Blue Steel synthetic rope says that it works better with a hawse than a roller. There are aluminum hawses that are polished up nice and smooth, unlike the rough cast iron ones. If you had steel cable then the drum and fairlead can both be burred. You're supposed to change the drum too if it is.

Now I don't know what I should get when it's time for a new winch. I'm going to put my 10-11 year old Warn winch on as soon as I figure out how.

Stuff is aces I bought the same exact same deal off ebay and have had nothing but good luck with it and will buy it again when I need to, it also comes with a "scuff guard"-sleeve that does double duty because it stays on your line when you retract it and it helps keep the suns UV rays from deteriorating the line. They also sell a 12ft plow lift line of the same stuff for $19.95 so you don't have to put the wear on your regular ATVing winch line. When I first got it I asked a lot of questions here on the forum and the majority said run it with a hawse instead of fairlead and I do think thats part of the reason why its been so good to me.

I bought this hawse fairlead when I oput on the synthetic rope. Looks nice, works great and was cheaper than a lot of the others out there.

The rope is really nice it doesn't snap back as bad as steel if it breaks and if you buy and block for the end it also helps preventing a snap back you can also make one cheaper by drilling a hole in the middle of a hockey puck and put the cable thru it before putting it on the winch. As for plowing if you are going to use your winch mostly for plowing in the winter then take the rope or steel cable off and put on a strap it will save the life of the rope/cable and most of the straps i've seen in catalogs and internet are $10 or less.
