Default hey a message of caution to water riders !

I work with a Guy who has a 700 sportsman the carbed version.

He put the complete snorkel kit on his machine tokk in out in the deep for a while the fill his oil with water. the rubber seal on the dipstick tube had some cracks and allowed the water to flow right on in. . .

the 700 still runs after a few oil system flushes but it's got a Rod knocking. . .
he now has an Arctic cat 650H1 he is building.

he is trying to sell the 700 sportsman he thinks he can still get about $4,000 for it with the bad rod knocking i have my doubts. . .

So check out your Dip stick tubes so this don't happen to you. . .

How long after he drove in the water did he notice that he had water in the oil? Usually if you get water in there you get itout right away it doesn't have any ill effects.

He told me he was in the water for while till it stalled than it would barly spin over so he got it towed out than he checked the oil and found it full of water ! when drained it at home it over fllowed a 5qt pail so it had to be leaking bad. . .he's guessing about 5qts of water to 2.5qts of oil was the ratio when he got to drain it.

First time i ever heard of that happening so i figured i would put the word so people check there dipstick's and tubes. . .

Good info. It's always the little easliy overlooked things that bite you. It doesn't take long for water circulating through the bearings to do major damage. Water is an abrasive. If you get water in the crankcase without RUNNING the engine it usualy does little damage. But if the engine is ran it WILL do damage, how much depends on how long it is ran, and how much water is present. Same thing applies to differentials and transmissions.

I do have to give the old 700 some props it ran with more water than oil inside of it. It was drain flush fill and still runs tho it knocks but it runs most engine would just lock up!
