So I am at a complete stop and I hit the button to engage 4wd. i hear the motor engaging but the indicator lamp doesn't go on. Is it possible that the lamp is bad and that it is engaging OK? Just don't want to get caught thinking that 4wd can get me out of a situation and find out that I can't get in 4x4 mode.

 

try jacking up both ends and then put it in 4wd, if only 2 wheels spin than it isn't engaging.

If you dont have a jack try putting 2 logs about 1ft apart and riding onto them. Make sure that you have someone who can pull you off when your done testing. Also make sure both logs are thick enough to lift both sets of wheels off the ground. also make sure you have a full skid plate to reduce the risk of denting necessary parts.

put it on concrete and try to turn in a circle. i can always tell if im in 4wd on concrete.
