05 Grizzly Rear End Problem?

Default 05 Grizzly Rear End Problem?

I have a problem. I have an 2005 Grizzly 660 that isn't running right. I have about 2300 miles on it right now and I noticed about a week ago that whenever I punched the throttle to me it felt like the clutch was slipping as the motor revved up, but little to no go. It wouldn't do this all the time, but it's getting progressively worse. I figured it was the belt. However, last night I got stuck and put it in 4x4 because it was slipping so bad it wouldn't move. I put in 4x4 crawled out no problem. I thought that was strange. So I intentionally got it stuck again. I noticed the back left tire would spin, but no right tire spin. I was like oh no we've got a problem. Took up to the shop and started looking at the rear end. I could see that oil had been leaking where CV and the axle housing meet (not the boot). I checked oil level and it was fine. Obviously somethings leaking and is probably broke. Would a worn out belt cause one tire not to turn (or have power). And second if its in the rear end is this a major problem? I think I can wrench on it enough not to take it to a stealership, but then again this is the first atv I've had with differentials not chains. I love my Grizz and haven't had one problem in 3 years of hard farm use. It's probably time for some maintainance with almost 2500 miles. I've never even replaced the belt. What was crazy is when I ran the bike to the shop in 4x4 it was hard to drive because the front end was pulling and only on tire in the back was pulling causing it to steer to one side. I'm sorry this was so long, but I need a few ideas of what it could be. When I put it up on a jack stand and rotated the rear tires there seemed like there was some play where the shaft meets the axle housing.

i have seen that a few times usually its the cv joint on the inside of the drive shaft . there is a round clip on the inside of the cv joint to keep the knuckle in , if this has broken then the drive would slip out of the cup .also if you had a bad wheel bearing on that corner it could cause the whole drive to pull out of the diff and then it would slip . if this has happened chances are that it will have the retaining clip slot worn off. so you will have to get a nuw cup for the drive , your belt has nothing to do with only one wheel turning its most likely your drive shaft, just pull it out and inspect it its a quick job

Could this also be why I was seeing some oily residue on the axle housing too? What exactally is the the cup? I don't have a manual, I should get one though. Which manual is best? How often do the wheel bearings go out? Is this much of a job to replace? Although I don't hammer on my bike much it does get used hard for chores around the farm.

Sounds like your driveshaft has popped out and..yes the circlip could be pressed inside the driveshaft too much, you may just need a new clip, your best thing to do is pull out the driveshaft and inspect it. The oil you see on the housing is from a worn axle seal, that was more than likely caused by the driveshaft being pulled out and wearing agaist the seal.
Grizzly's are known for driveshaft problems, but most were near 2002 years when they first came out. I personally never had a problem(yet), but I do not ride mine hard and I know to keep the throttle down when climbing out of the deep stuff(heavy throttle in thick stuff or hills can snap axles)
For a manual you can buy DVD's off Ebay or buy a Service manual book like I did through a dealer(expensive) but well worth it for the specs and diagrams.
What kind of tires are you running?, bigger tires can wear out bearings prematurely.

Everythings stock. I took a look at stuff in more detail last night and have determined that the drive shaft did pop out. I think I may know what might have caused it. I have a 25 gallon sprayer sitting on the back rack. Whenever I fill it up full it really squats the back end. Maybe there was enough strain on the rear end it popped the driveshaft out. I had another question. The clips that hold the boots on, if you take those off do you need new ones? How do you get them off?

You can get a Haynes manual that will tell you how to pull the axle. Order two seals just to have a spare.

i agree with atv man the seals on the diff dont last long on the grizz or the 450 . the cup i was referring to is the inside part of the drive near the diff you can split the drive there . thats where the clip is inside the boot rubber in the inside of the cup . you can get the cup separate if its damaged but the rest is one piece . beware the left and right cups are different so if you have to get a new one be specific they can be got aftermarket .

maybe u can help me i got a 2005 grizzley and it making a popin nois from rear differntial and noticed that the drive shaft is some what loos or slopy goin into rear diff. what do you think the problem is and what should i or how should i go bout reparing it?
