Stock PXT tire ply issue
#1
I have read on here many times that people are telling other people that the factory PXT tires are 2 star. They are NOT, they are 3 star 6 ply tires, not sure where that bad information came from but it is untrue. They come with 6 ply tires, once again the PXT is a 6 ply tire.
I'm not saying the PXT tires are the best or anything, just trying to clarify some misinformation that has been floating around.

I've even heard people say they're 2-ply instead of 6. All you have to do is look at them. *** = 6-ply.
BTW I had ZERO problems in 2 years on my first set of PXTs but have already poked a hole in the sidewall of a new one. Two fiber plugs in the hole and it's as good as new. If I had fat plugs instead of skinny ones it would've only taken one, but I'm stuck with skinny plugs until I buy refills for my repair kit.

well what ever ply they are they lasted me like 2 month here in Arizona 2 of them had a bunch of little pin holes in the thread that the green stuff wouldnt stop from leaking, and one had a slice in the side wall, so I just bought Bighorns. But I thought they where 6 ply too but they sure did not show it.

then there the cheapest and softest 6 ply tires in the world.
there alot like these tires which are only 3 ply and since polaris 489's they used prior too the pxt were only 3 ply as well, i cant imagine they would go to a heavy 6 ply tire. imo.</end quote>

Wow Stendori. You're way off on this one. No offense intended, but have you ever had a Polaris before this year? I thought you did and would know better. That says 3*, not 3-ply, and it's not just a lot like it, it's identical except for the brand name on it. Carlisle makes the PXTs, and the A.C.T. is the same exact 3-star, 6-ply tire without the Polaris name on it. And they went from the good old 4-ply Goodyear Tracker Ps and 6-ply 489s to a 6-ply PXT, not from a 3-ply to another 3-ply or a 6-ply. Titan 489s and Carlisle 489s are both 3* 6-ply tires. As a matter of fact I've never seen a 3-ply tire in my life. Nothing but even nunbers. 2, 4, 6, and 8 plys.

I have to suspect it is a way they are "Rating" tires and not really an actual "PLY" count.
If you look at the footnote for Ply in that link. it says Star Rating at 50 mph I would think that means it performs like some "standard" somewhere.
Before these rating systems you bought a certain ply. now you buy a tire rated as a certain ply. take a 6 ply truck tire, it you stand it next to a 6 ply rated tire they don't even feel the same. But none the less the 6 ply rated tire is designed to handle the load similar to a 6 ply tire. Nothing about puncture resistance etc.
I know it always seems that a radial or even the new "metric" standard tires, while they perform equivalent or better in most cases, seem softer and therefore more easily punctured than a good old fashion multi-ply Rubber tire.

i hate to tell ya but there are smaller ply tires(not atv tires im talking about) then 3 ply. as for the star rating, i was going by what i saw on the carlie web site as was mentioned it is ment for a speed rating when you read it on there site. as i said before if the pxt tire were a 6 ply tire it must be really soft as its NO WAY near like my true 6 ply tire on my itp xtr mud lites. imo.

I have nothing against my stockers as a good trail tire. BUT, I have had a number
of flats and also (noticed lately) they don't hold air very long. I was thinking about
just adding slime in them from them to keep from losing air. All my friends and two
cousins have exp the same issue as I. We go on most of the same trails riding and
where there is hard pack and some rock, they get beat up quite a bit.
I would agree, they seem like a softer trail tire. I really really look forward to my
next tire purchase (in a few months hopefully).

Radials seem softer in all ways.
I remember when Radials were new to cars. I had just bought that morning a brand new set of Eagle ST's for my 67 Cougar, drove home that night parked it.
Got up next morning and both fronts were flat. Had run over some 18 gauge hardware cloth and put 12 holes in one and 14 in the other. Softest 4 ply rated tire I had ever seen.
I must admit thought I really love the ride the radials give vs the wife's 489's at same air pressure.
I haven't experienced Air Loss in my pxt's I do run slime in them. The wife's Carlisle 489's hold air too (no Slime)

I don't know what the PXT's are, I know they have 3 stars, but they sure are awful light for 6 ply IMO.
