i just copied and paste it so you get the idear. but notice the 3* and the 2* and this is under the ply. so assuming they are suppose to be ply's and my 489's are 3 ply's according to the website(which wont come up) so i guess im confused.

Here is a sight that pretends to explain them. http://www.4x4review.com/quads/tech/ATV-Tire-Tech.asp
However, notice when it comes to that 3* rating they are careful to say "3 ply rated. "
That is the only thing I keep coming to as well. it isn't really 3 ply but rather the new technology performs equivalent to a 3 ply tire.
On the Carlisle link they even added "...at 50 mph."
So I am guessing the * rating is some elusive rating based on someones testing that said this tires performs equivalent to our "standard, bumpty pump tire that is 3 ply." and so it gets a 3* rating, meaning it isn't 3 ply but rather performs like that in a given set of conditions.
Smoke and Mirrors to me.. I mean be honest!!!

Rickeyparker, I don't believe that is correct.
I believe that is technically a 2 or 3 ply tire in your example, unless the Sidewall plies extend from Bead to Bead across the tread pattern adding to the Plies that are in the tread path running the circumference of the tire. If they did extend across the bead then it would be a 4 or 6 ply tire with a 2 or 3 ply sidewall.
Of course again they threw all that out the window when they went to Load Rating in vehicles and Star rating for ATV's
it can have what seems like any make up as long as it performs like > name your rating.

well my final say on it is, no matter what the ply rating is on the pxt tires. they suck for being puncture resitance. compared to my 6 ply radials(which i have put holes in) the pxt's are really easy to put holes in. there a good all round tire for sure, but not the best for sharp objects. imo.

I'm not a tire junky by any means. I hardly know anything about them other than you gotta put air in em and check em wit that silver gauge thingy with black and red numbers on it. Now I've never had a complete flat with my Stealths tires, however I do have one that I have to put air in it every three days. I would like to have a stronger tire that I wouldnt have to do that to every few days, but I'm waiting for them to wear out before I go spend half a paycheck on new tires. While riding I seem to get through the mudholes better than any of my buddys do, but then again I'm the only Polaris so the true 4 wheel is probably the reason.
To sum it up I like the tires that come on it and I cant complain of its performance for a stock tire!

I have to disagree that the pxt tires are weak. I just spent a week in colorado riding the alpine loop on my 03 sportsman with the pxt's on it and my wifes canned ham 800 outty that has the act's on it. 500 miles for the week on nothing but sharp jagged rock and not one flat tire. The sharp jagged rock sure played hell on the luggs though.
