Default Superwinch Keeps Smoking Solenoids

Howdy yall,

I have a 2500lb superwinch that seems to puking out solenoids. It's on my old ladies wolverine 450. It has only been used maybe 20 times tops and does not see what I would call extreme riding conditions - deep water or mud ect. I have triple checked to make sure it's wired right; which it has been all along. The winch always works great if you jumper it or the solenoid is actully working. It's already been through 2 solenoids now and I'm just wondering if I should just by a Warn winch for it. I guess this kinda serves me right for buying made in China junk, but I thought it would last for the minimal use it sees. Anyone think there might be another issue(s) at hand here?

Thx,

Beer Season

Make sure the wire from the battery is large enough, make sure all the connections and crimp fittings are tight. Also if you have a ground wire, that needs to be sized correctly and a good ground is needed. If all that is good, you may need a heavier duty solenoid that will handle more amp draw.

Raptor450 you are right, if this thing isn't getting good enough current it will smoke it. I had a simiar problem and actually double wired it.

Thankx guys,

I will try going to a heavier wire. Any guage recommedations? Do I need to do it from just from the battery to the solenoid or would it be better to run all the way to the winch itself?

All the way to the winch. Not real familiar with ATV winches but I would think it needs at least 10 gauge and not over 4 gauge. I would probably run the same as the wire going to the starter, which is probably 8 gauge. The finer stranded wire will work better than the thick stranded or solid wire.
