00 Trail Boss 325 Starting problems
#1
I've been have trouble starting my quad. I picked up a replacement spark plug because I used to have to pull the plug then spray the carb with carb cleaner then it would start. So after replacing the plug it would start fine. Well I haven't started it in a while & its not fireing. I have plenty of fuel in it. It will sound like it will almost fire but then the next time sound like the starter slips. I tried the pull cord but I'ver never been able to start it with that. (even though my dad has the same exact quad & his starts easy with the pull cord). I may put it on the battery charger later to see if the battery may be down. https://www.geocities.com/dadngt/4wheeler.JPG Theres a pic of it I'm planning to sell & I'm trying to fix the problems with it so I can make the most from it to get out of an upside down car payment. The only other major problem is the hand brake does not hold fluid in its tank, I was told that a simple brake bleed could solve that problem. Any suggestions? Also how much would you this it would be worth after its fixed? Thanks

From what you are describing, sounds like starter gearshaft (behind recoil housing) is kicking back. Could be damaged where it engages flywheel,or may just need cleaning and a little grease. On the starting problem sounds like stopped up carb jets or varnished up,depending on how long sitting up ( use stabil when have repaired and wont have this problem again) If brake resevoir not holding fluid, could be leaking at calipers or can evaporate from non use and just need bleeding! As far as worth depends on condition actually more than book value! GOOD time of year to SELL! Hopefully some other posters have a Kelly or NADA book to give you a rough idea of value. Good luck.

Ok well I'm able today to push the quad back into the garage so I can look at it. I took a pic to show where I'm at. In the picture the belt seems to be real loose & I'm not sure if it should be. What should I be looking for now thanks

I'm think this is the flywheel right? if so where should I clean & add grease to see it thats the problem

Well I'm not having the best of luck to be able to get the most out of resale.
I pulled the spark plug to check if it was ok & its got oil & gas on it not to mention the sparkplug boot has broken the metal piece in the boot was still on the end of the plug. so I pulled the front plastic body panels to find the other end of the plug wire so I can just replace it in the process I somehow broke the switch for the choke. Normally I would have gotten mad & made things worse but I calmly put everything back together cleaned up the garage & pushed the quad back out to the storage building.

The picture you have is the clutch assemblies. (primary and secondary)
It should be a little loose, factory manual says deflection should be 1 1/8".
The brake could be several things. Where is the fluid leaking at?
The 00 Trail Bosses around here (Dallas) are selling for about 1500-2000 dollars.
Well, that's what they're asking, not sure what they're getting.

Thanks Scootergptx I found the Kelly blue book for ATV on the net & if mine is in good condition (not like now) it can go at $1800. Not exactly sure where the fluid is leaking. The brake resivor was replaced a few years ago after the quad was flipped & it & the brake handle were the only things broken since then It worked fine but once I get the running problems fixed I'll jump into the brake problem.

If you have oil on the plug, you might want to do a compression check, or be sure it's just wet from gas and black in color and no oil. Since it's a four stroke, the oil shouldn't be getting into the compression area.
Did it smoke any when it ran?

It didn't smoke & the black on the plug looked more like a carbon build up its only been run a couple times since I added the new plug a few months ago. But its mostly a gas smell so its flooding right? I usually have to choke it just to get it to start but at the moment the switch broke off by the key. That should just be a replacement part right? & the spark plug wire as well? thanks

Well, this model is really cold natured, so I even have to use the choke when it's hot outside on the first run of the day. If it's black, you're jetting on the carb is off. But if you have a cracked boot, that's gonna cause problems too. Is the boot from the air box to the carb, or carb to motor?
Think I still have a spare carb to motor boot.

Sorry I don't have the books for the quad anymore & am not exactly sure what Im looking at but willing to try to fix it myself first. With that said I traced the plug wire from the plug on the motor up to a box behind the headlight (not sure what that small box is called) anyways thanks for the help so far
