If the starter is turning at what seems to be full speed, then its the Bendix in the starter not engaging the starter gear to the flywheel. If the starter is not turning at full speed then It may not be getting enough power. Check all connections for corrosion, white or green build up on the connections. Also check your battery's voltage output. This will also effect your starters performance. If you do find build up on any of the terminals use a solution of baking soda and water.

The 300 doesn't have a typical Bendix. Instead it's got that round ring that acts sort of like one-way clutch (which rarely ever goes bad due to its much more simple design than Bendix) and it works in conjunction with the limiter gear which slips at certain (excessive) torque (in case of kick back) to prevent starter/flywheel gear breakge.

I had the same problem and the starter motor gear that attaches to the splined shaft on the starter is bad. I took the gear off the starter and found out it comes apart. I welded the parts together and it works like a charm.
