Default ATV for my daughter

Howdy...

I'm VERY new here...

My 9 year old daughter would like to get a 4 wheeler for Christmas, and I'd like to get her one...but I don't want to break the bank. I'd like to keep it under 600 (well under if at all possible). She's about 54" tall and about 70 pounds.

I'd like to get a 110, that I can govern down until she's more comfortable on it. I also want a remote kill switch.

these are two that I found that looked nice (but I know very little about them)

</a>

I'm not set on ANY specific one yet, but I want one that she can ride for at least a year or two. She'll be doing no off-roading...just tooling around the yard and a field...nothing major...

any recomendations? If she gets into it and enjoys it, I wouldn't mind upgrading to a better brand in the future....but I'd hate to drop 2k on a Polaris or some such and have it sit in the shed.

Everyone I know who has bought one of these "off brand" machines has lived to regret it! None of them has lasted even 6 months, and then they can't get parts or service....it's a real nightmare....

Find something used from one of the large well established manufacturers, and be sure there is a dealer near you where you can get parts and service if necessary!

I'd love to do so...however...that quadruples the price...and the risk of her not wanting it shortly...which would be more of a waste than getting the cheaper one, and upgrading when she's ready...

what sort of issues are there with used ones from major manufacturers? I'm sure it depends on how abused they are...but is there any real savings?

I second what ReconRanger said. I once bought a Chinese brand quad for my younger son for the same reasons you stated. I had a hard time keeping the thing running. Battery kept draining, carb. was hard to adjust, had to replace starter, etc. In the long run you'll end up putting more money into it than if you bought a used one from one of the major brands. I believe most of the major companies' kid's quads are made in Korea or Taiwan. Better quality. Oh, and don't believe it when they say they are a "Honda clone" or you can use parts from a Suzuki. I didn't find that to be true.

I'm with reconranger. I would stay away from off brands as it seems everyone who has purchased one has had major headaches and regrets. I am also looking for a 50 or 90 for my nephew who is 6, but is 42" tall and 65 lbs already. I have a really good relationship with my local dealers. My popo dealer also carries Kymco atv's and says they have no problems with them or parts availability. I think the most important thing is not so much the brand, but whether or not your local dealer carries it and offers parts. Finding a used one is another story. They are out there and probably not in near as bad condition as one would think.

As for the remote kill switch...I was sold on the idea. However, it is my undertanding that they are not reliable. If that is true, then I will wait until they are perfected as I don't want to rely on it and be disappointed! Maybe someone else on the forum can help us both out here.....

I've heard a lot of good about Kymco. Not quite the quality of the major brands but making ground every year.

I honestly cant speak for anyone else about the chinese quads like the ones you linked, I do not know anyone who has owned one nor have I myself. I have just heard nothing but bad about them via this site.

My son wanted a quad also and we got him the kawasaki kfx90 (which, I think was made by kymco for kawasaki, "I THINK") it was the best money I have spent, yes it was a lot more than the chinese quads but he beats this thing to death and it hasnt given us ANY troubles in 2 years of usage. He jumps it, runs thru mud / water. And will start on the first press of the button or first kick every time.

But I totally understand where you are comming from with the price of a name brand and not wasting the money on one if you daughter wont ride it much, but keep in mind, if for some reason she dont ride it and you end up wanting to sell it, a name brand with sell easier and for far more than a used off brand will.

Sorry this is probably not much help to your delima.

Actually it helps me a lot. It's good to know the Kymco can handle some abuse! My biggest concern with the off brands is the safety. A stuck throttle or something would be very bad. I would rather pay more money than have to explain to my sister that I tried to save a few bucks at the expense of my nephews life! I agree the resale would be much better....I'll just keep an eye out for a good used one....

thank you....it IS helpful...

resale is a concern....but I do have a 2.5 year old son...so if she doesn't want to ride it, I can keep it for him...and if he doesn't like it...then...well...I can always donate it or something...

You can usually find new-ish trade in on good ATVs for kids.....

As the others have said, I'd rather buy used in a major brand, than a new Chinese "toy" since that is what they are....
