While I don't prepare in any way I like to up the fuel from regular to premium in cold weather and always give it a proper warm up no giving it gas while warming up thats what I do.

Storage Tips:

Read owners manual for model specific tips, but generally I would:

Drain the gas from the tank, it will be junk by Spring anyway. If leaving gas in tank, add Stabil or similar to gas.
Shut off fuel petcock and let quad idle till it dies. This drains carb and float bowl so no gunk in them in the Spring.
Fill all grease fittings with fresh grease. This is so the old moisture filled dirt loaded grease doesn't spend the winter corroding parts. Do the same with wheel bearings.
Plug up exhaust and air intake to keep 'critters' out.
Drain old oil from crankcase. Again so it doesn't spend the winter damaging engine. You ARE going to change it in Spring anyway, aren't you?.
Clean and lube all that moves on the quad, steering shaft bushings, control cables etc. Again to stop corrosion.
Clean brakes with brake cleaner.
Check coolant, make sure it's fresh and will keep quad block from freezing.
Remove battery and put on battery tender, or leave in place and put on battery tender.

What HeftyLefty said!

+Plus+ wash the ATV from top to bottom. I like to add 5-6psi more air than recommended in the tires. Unless you plan on checking then during the winter months...and adding as necessary.

Hope this helps...
