Default Carb Problem?

Gents,

My bike is running rich (black plug) and stalls out when going down hills. Like if I'm just coasting down a hill using the brakes and not giving any throttle then she will die out.

Just put in a new plug, carb has never been rebuilt. Think I can make A/F adjustments to the carb or should I rebuild first?

Tks

Check the float level, clean the carbs. leave the A/F adjustments alone if you have made no changes to the filter or box. Also clean the air filter a dirty one will cause less air in the mix witch = a rich condition

Default Carb Problem?

I removed the carb and cleaned it up, seems to have fixed the rich mixture problem as the plug looks good now, continue to monitor.

However the floats were set correctly as per the mikuni tuning manual I have. The issue with stalling on hills is still occuring, only now I'm noticing that it happens anytime the engine idles when its hot.

Driving along, let off on the throttle for a few secs and stall. Park the bike for a min after a ride and stall. Give it a few pulls and some throttle and way to go again. Note that this only happens when its hot, bike will idle for 30min+ when cold. Any ideas?

What is your air to fuel mixture set at right now. This only effects the idle, off idle it really has no effects on the operations. I believe mine is set 1 1/4 turn out. When you cleaned the carb out did you take the little pilot jet out to make sure it was clear of junk?

I have cleaned it up pretty good, I got carb cleaner through all the jets however I didn't go to the extent to take it all apart. When I opened the carb it was pretty clean but you never know. The air screw is set at its factory 2 turns as far as I can tell as it was never adjusted.

I know what your getting at though, correct me if I'm wrong, seems the engine is running correct A/F during main jet operation but running lean during idle and overheating. Would a lean idle cause stalling without detonation?

let your bike idle for a bit and when it dies pull the plug. take note of the color. put plug back in and run bike. open the throttle up while riding and while you still have it WOT hit the kill switch. pull hte plug and check the color. the two checks should be almost identical to each other. if the idle color is off then you know you need to adjust the pilot setting
