Default Rear Brakes on a Prairie 2001

Hello All
I am new to this site and have been reading all day so I decided to post.

I have a 2001 Kawasaki Prairie 300 4x4. I am trying to change the rear brakes. I took off the tire, hub, and nuts, and removed the drum cover. Now what?
The drum will not move. I thought it might spin because of the notches on the front of the drum? Do I need a special tool to remove it or is it just stuck?
It just seems like there is something else holding it on there.

It's just stuck. Try the usual penetrating oil, tap with a hammer, etc. It's aluminum, so trying to put some sort of puller on it might not be a good idea. I've had several of mine apart and with a little patience it should come off.

Here is a link to a pretty long post on the Prairie 400. There is a lot of info that applies to your P300 on there though...if you're interested. Good Luck!

Thanks I will have to try again I guess!

in the center of the drum there is something that looks like a bushing or maybe a bearing it dosent look like any rust holding it on like that. do I treat it like a car drum? I know its not steel but do I beat on it from the sides to try to loosin it up?

I think you're talking about the seal surface on the outside center of the drum. The dust cover has a seal in it and it wears on that surface. You will see the axle bearing once you get the drum off and take the backing plate off. (Although it's not necessary to take the backing plate off if you're just changing the brakes.) When you get the drum and shoes off, you might want to take the actuator pivot bolt off and clean the gunk out of it. You will have to take the actuator lever off the pivot bolt first and then the pivot bolt should slide out of the backing plate. They usually get gunked up and the cable won't want to snap back very well. It has a grease groove in it to hold the new grease. Also, make sure you clean and re-grease the seal lips before you put the dust cover back on.

If you remember that thje drum is aluminum and not steel, you should be able to spray, tap, pry, spray, tap, swear, tap, fiddle with it 'til it comes off. Good Luck...

PS If you go to that post over on Nyroc's site, there is some discussion on brakes there. I don't remember all of the details, but there might be some help there too.
