'04 Yamaha Kodiak 450 just died
#1
Hey
I just bought this bike about 3 months ago and it only had 730kms on it. it was a great deal I couldn't pass up. It now has 1350 km on it and no more for until I get it fixed.
while on my way to work one day, I stopped at a dirt road to do some fishtails. While preparing to do another, I pushed the throttle in all way and the bike just lost power. From that point on I could not go above 25 km/hr without loosing power (and the quad sounded like it was going to die). I drove home after work with no problem.
About a week later, I was trailriding and about 25 km in the bush the quad outright died!! I tried to start it again, but no success. The engine would turn over but nothing else.
What I have done:
Fuses checked and double checked
Removed and grounded the spark plug - No spark was produced. A new plug was tested and still no result.
I have removed the front half of the plastic body in hopes that the problem would be lite up like vegas. No such luck.
A friend of mine seems to think that the CDI is finished. Where is it and how do I test it?
Also, if anyone has any other suggestions I would love to hear them
thanks

IT SEEMS LIKE EVERYONE IS FAST TO POINT AT THE CDI BOX AND STATOR BUT USUALLY THOSE GO DO TO WIRING ISSUES (IVE DONE THE SAME) BEST THING TO DO IS GRAB A 12 PACK AND CHECK EVERY WIRE CONNECTION WHERE THEY PLUG IN, UN PLUG AND CLEAN THEM. LOOK OVER ALL THE WIRES TO SEE IF THEY HAVE RUBBED THROUGH ITS PRITTY COMMON FOR WIRE HARNESES TO RUB THROUGH AND GROUND OUT PAY ALOT OF ATTENTION TO THE WIRES IN THE REAR WHERE ALL THE DIRT GETS THROWN AROUND

Don,t jump to the Big Buck stuff like the Stator or CDI as of yet. My Big Bear lost its spark and everyone said it was the same thing ,turned out to be the $30 ignition coil the plug wire runs into.
When stators and CDIs quits there more like light bulbs do, they work or never work they don,t slowly die. A bad coil can run fine until it get warmed up then acts up ,than finally dies permanent.

Thanks for the replies
How do I test the ignition coil? I have a multi-meter at home.

Opening the throttle wide open makes it harder for the spark to jump, so a weak spark might act that way. It also could be cause by lack of fuel from a clogged jet or fuel line etc. I would make sure that there is no spark. If you didn't ground well you might not be able to tell. You can buy a cheap spark tester. You plug the spark plug wire into it and it has a clear tube you can see the spark in. Crank it in a dark place to check it. Also check the spark plug wire and connections. You want to be sure it is the spark before you start replacing parts.
