The Bearings and seals do usually stay in place when you pull the axel...If they fall out, It usually means they are worn. (carrier bearing usually have to be pounded or pressed out)
Put your finger in the carrier and make sure you can freely move the bearings. Make sure there is no metal or dirt particles in there. Clean out as much of the old grease as you can get.
Before you slide the new axel in, Make sure you lube the carrier and the axel. The axel should slide right in at that point. Often requires a bit of a push. Just a little hint...do not overpack with grease (it blows out the seals) and do not overtighten the axel lock nut(s).
I have changed the axel on all my machines with no ill affects. (banshee, blaster, 400ex)
