my 2002 400EX does the same thing, it sounds like they are little men in there playing music!

Typical for the 400ex to make that noise.

it also could be due to wear on the rocker arms..
if there is pretty good wear (almost pitting ) on the rocker arms you will hear extra noise regardless of how well adjusted the valves are.
if its bothers you too much pull the valve cover and have a gander at all the rocker arms....
been there done that $200 later all new rocker arms...

i doubt its the timing chain... if it was that loose it would have probably already blew its self apart...

the odds are its your timing chain. it happens alot to 400exs. but dont worry its an cheap and kinda easy fix. just get on ebay and search 400ex heavy duty timing chain. there is a kit that comes with gaskets, seals, cam sprocket bolts, and of course the timing chain. and the timing chain is a little larger and is much more durable. i put one in my 400 and the ticking went away. and sense its a heavy duty timing chain the odds of it coming back are slim. so I hope i helped and sorry i kinda got into a rant. lol
