knock noise,clutch?
#1
I have a 1999 polaris ranger that has a low rpm knock noise. The guy I bought it from states that it is coming from the clutch. When I throttle up a little bit the noise goes away. I have 400 hrs on this unit. The seller told me that I could have the clutch fixed and the noise would come back in a couple hundred hrs. This is my first polaris so I now nothing about the clutch but I do have a breakdown on the clutch. Any help ??

My '07 800 has a noise like that, started at about 10 hours and has been there ever since. Check this video and see if it sounds the same. Read the comments and see if anything applies to you. I'd just as soon not have the noise, but it seems there's nothing that can be done about it. Oh well.

Could be anything from warped clutch cover or drive clutch spider wear, will have metal sound,as gets worse will sound like a diesel!. Check for wear grooves, excessive slack where small (6) buttons glide up and down on clutch.Could be the problem.IF this the problem, then could possibly quiet down with new bushings,BUT noise would come back as they wear,SOUNDS like previous owner knew about this? Cant buy clutch sheaths, only bushings, spring, weights, rollers, etc! If gets too loud, then I would replace clutch. NOT CHEAP,over 400 bucks.

It sounds like your machine has a knock but a lot faster knock than mine. My machine sounds just like a rod knocking but it is a lot slower knock. As soon as I increase the RPM'S just slightly it goes away. Thanks for the input.

Clutch buttons are shot. You can have the clutch rebuilt or you can find a decent used one on Ebay.I have found rebuilt ones on there
