96 xplorer counterbalancer

where is this mythical creature located, what do i look for, and what kind of oil does it take and how much and let me ask u this guys what arer other things to look for on this machine i am an old honda man i just bought this polaris, thanks again

Oil...10-30. The dipstick is located right next to the carb. Best way to get at it is to pull the seat and use a long neck funnel. Don't worry if you overfill it, excess will be expelled through the breather.
Not much to "watch" for...just change the fluids, keep it greased and enjoy.

just went out and checked it it was showing very low on oil and had a gassy smell but no signs of water, also there was another dipstick on roght side assuming it is tranny it was low also, what fluid to use there

Book calls for "Polaris premium synthetic chaincase lube". If you go to polaris's website, create an account(easy,fast) you can download your owners manual...It's very helpful. Not sure of it goes back to 96 or not but I know it goes back to 98, which should be the same bike as your 96.
