I need to look into getting a tranny for a project quad im building.. i have a 2000 tb frame with a trx 250r front end i put on i took off the 250 and im puttin on a heavily mod 400 2 stroke... im wondering is there a difference in the trannys that polaris used on the tb ,scramblers, trailboss???? of course im looking for a 2 wheel tranny not the 4x4... are the gearing the same in them??? which one is best for speed or are the all the same after the clutch mods???

I don't think so.there is a guy who put an xc700 polaris snowmobile engine in his scrambler and did not have to change the transmission or the clutch. What are the 400 engine's mods?

havent got that far im still on the frame! but heres a list of whats in the works: and ill do pics along the way if people are interested.
frame is a 2000 tb with a 87 trx 250r front end( almost done with that part just waiting on a order or chromoly to arrive. also im custom making my swingarm (chromoly) in +1.5 to keep the nose of the quad on the ground. also ive lighten the frame chromoly from the back brace to the rear grab bar, and the belly pan, floor boards, battery box and all strut braces, and steering post plate was removed. the steering post will be outta of chromoly of course. im puttin raptor pro peg nerfs on. houser +2 steering stem, pro taper bars, leagar +2 long travel a arms, shocks i havent decided on yet? also im puttin on a ryde fx clicker shock in the rear. battery was eliminated, oil tank and pump gone (premixin it) starter is gone! im goin to buy a RAD MFG axle carrier, and im using a durablue axle, with predator hubs so i can run 4/110 rims. the front has 400ex spindles and lonestar hubs, maxxis razrII in the front and razr in the rear, rims im going with the itp pro baja rims, later ill get the fancy carbon rims on the market..also im using a yamaha banshee brake on the right side for the front brakes and the stock brake on the left for the rear. with galfer brake lines all around..

for the motor: I want to trailport the thing and use premium pump gas only cuz im not racing the thing and if i go on a long ride i dont want to burn the motor up.
-weisco piston
-billet cool head with dome size??
-i want to find the big bore jug, 440
-bosen reeds more than likely
-i will port and polish
-bore the new jug .020 over
-aaen pipe
-aaen roller action clutch kit
-single cable throttle
-def a larger carb unknown right now how big
-im going to use a CBR 600 radiator i think
-k and n with pre filter
- sidewinder o-ring chain and sprockets
and the rest is still unknown , taking one thing at a time buts thats whats on the agenda, the main thing is gettin the frame together, my father is the motor guru he builds drag car motors and his friends have machine shops so that cuts down the cost on the motor hop ups..
im also doing my gf quad a 2000 tb also but im not goin crazy with that, just a shock system like aaen in the front with a +2+1 arm i made outta chromoly, ill use a polaris snowmobile shock just inside the strut that ill custom fit in, and kimpex struts and ryde fx shock in the rear too.. hpd steering stem, fasstflex bar, hpd pipe,.020 bored and ported and polished, bigger carb. RAD billiet carrier, durablue axle also, custom gel seat for a softer ride for the gf, banshee nerf bars, banshee brake lever on the right stock on the left with galfer liness all around too.. and im having the paint job redone this winter too.. black with hot pink flames.. that was done already but im redoing the flames placing and shaving the plastic a little to look good with the nerfs.. itp holeshot tires with ss rims, and a hpd chain tensioner... maybe if i have time ill make a chromoly swingarm for hers too....
after those ill work on my scrammy 500 lol next year some time lol

You want to use the 400 or 500 tranny because they will hold up to more torque than the 250. It would work but I say the trans would self destruct sooner.

I found a 250 hi/lo 4x4 tranny on ebay for my 500 project but wanted more info. I called either Ritter or Aaen and was told the torque capacity was not enough. Sure I could put a GM THM 250 behind a big block and it would work but a THM 400 would sure hold up better. A 2000 Xplorer 4x4 250 gearcase PN 1341381 vs a 2000 Xplorer 400 4x4 gearcase PN 1341379. But you are correct the 2x4 250 or 400 have the same part number. Go figure.
