Default Can you just replace one half of engine case

I just tore the engine out of my 98 polaris magnum 425 to repair the crank case half. I have already tore the engine down and have a donor case half for it. My question is someone told me that the case halves are a matched set. Meaning I can't mix and match two case halves from two different engines. The crank holes won't line up because they are line bored from the factory??? Is this at all true or can I do like I was doing and go ahead and bolt it back together with the new case half. Thanks for any help.
