hey im new here been reading lots of your guys post and i got lots of tips also...but i inherited this atv, from a good friend, he just had it and then found out he had cancer so he never goto do anything with it. What i have been told by him was he wasnt sure what was really wrong with it. he told me a new battery and he thought a head gasket. and that was it. I have recently got it now in my garage and began to work on it. i got a new battery for it, cleaned the carbs 3 times. changed gas and oil and lubed up where i think it would need. im machanicly inclined just never owned a four wheeler in my life never been on one never worked on one. So im sorta lost. i got new spark plugs also. ok now that i changed everything cleaned the air filters out and i have spark just it wont go. it hasnt been started in at least 2 years that i know of. i found out when i pulled the pull cord it was soaked with gas and oil, so i did some reading here and found out there was a drain so i drained it and left it drain over night it filled up almost 3/4 of a paint can i thought was alot just sitting in the bottom of the crank. so then i ddecided to take exhaust off and that too was full of fluid also soo i drained all that overnight also and put compressed air to the inside of it. put it all together and it still wont start. but it seems it wants too it will roll over but just doesnt seem to get the boost to keep it going it will just die out im sorta lost here this is all new too me and im very curious too see what being on a atv is all about im 29 and dont mind learning all the new stuff to a 2 stroke and i want to get my hands dirty so i know a lil more about my machine thanks guys

if you had oil/gas on the rope then your probably going to have to replace the crank seals and probably the bearings too. its that not bad of a job. but you do have to completely disassemble to motor.

so should i stop friggin around with everything and just take the motor out and start dissassembling? ive never done anything inside amotorbefore. crank seals and bearings.. how can i diagnose thats my problem im waiting on a compression testing now but i thought some sort of seals were gone if the rope was covered in it.. any advice about where to start on takin it out (the engine)

the best way to test it the seals is to get a leak down tester. that lets you fill the cylinder with compressed air. then you can listen for air leaks. if you hear leaks coming from the bottom of the motor then you know your seals are shot. on the 400 motors theres a counter balance area that something can be tricky. the first thing i would do is buy a manual and read the chapters needed to disassemble the motor 3 or 4 times so you know exactly what needs to be done.

how much is this polaris worth as is do you think i have a bunch of ppl looking to buy it from me, but it wont start and im sure it will need a good tune up like springs and maybe some chains it has 3 chains on this machine. but im canadian, think it would be worth 1000 plastic all in good shape low miles
