Priarie Carb
#1
Ok so my cousins Prairie, im not sure what year, won't run right. My uncle has taken apart the carb 8 or 9 times, carb cleaner, boiling lemon juice, etc. Still won't run unless you cover about half the carb. Is there a trick to these like a secret hole that gets clogged? BTW it sat all summer.

do you maen it will start/run if you cover half the air intake on th carb???
if that is the case then you need to richen you pilot jet up, and clean the passage out. pilot jet is on the bottom of the carb, outside the bowl, twords the engine. its a small brass skrew. if its a mikuni carb skrew it IN about 1/4 turn at a time. if its a khein carb turn it OUT 1/4 turn at a time.
it sounds like the passseges inthe carb itself are partly clogged, and there is only a little bit of fuel makeing ita way into the piloy jet. so cutting of the air flow helps balance out the small mixture of fuel, allowing the engine to run.
see if that helps, if not take the carb completly apart and see if you can find some CHEM-DIP. it is an industrial cleaner that will degunk just about anything, but remember you have to disasemble the carb completly to use CHEM-DIP. that stuff will eat rubber and seals

turn the mixture screw all the way IN, and then back it out 2.5 turns... if it runs when covered, go 1 full turn more... 1/4 turn adjustments from there</end quote></div>
I would NOT adjust anything on the carb if nothing has been adjusted and the quad ran well before the storage with the current carb setting.

So he bought a new carb and it fixed the high idle problem that has been there forever, but still would not stay running w/o covering almost 3/4 of the inlet to the carb. So my uncle put it all back together to take it to the local shop to see if they fix it, and for smiles and laughs he tried to start it when it was all put back together. Thing started up and ran fine! Apparently all the ducting for the air intake runs all the way upfront and it needs the restriction of that to run right!

Well it ran fine and yes it was clogged up after sitting. Its been soaked in all kinds of stuff while its been apart. Still not right. Getting it ultrasonic cleaned soon.</end quote></div>

yep.. you are right.. *I* wouldn't adjust a carb that had just been sitting awhile... however, THIS ONE had been torn apart.
Thanks for the good advice, just not applicable here
