Default Grizzly Engine Braking

Looking at getting a Grizzly 700, would like to know what your opinions are of the engine braking. I currently have a Honda Rubicon and when it is in low range and first gear it will literally crawl down almost any slope so thats what I would be comparing it to. I can only ride one in a dealer's lot so I don't know what to expect. Thanks

I guess it all depends on what you like or are use to. Recently on Grizzly Central Forums a former Honda owner bought a 700 Grizzly and didn't like it because it had too much engine braking as apparently there is a Honda without it and he was thinking about selling his Grizzly so he could "coast". I had a 2005 700 Polaris Sportsman and the engine braking in low for it was not as much as the Grizzly. From how you describe the Honda, however, I don't believe it will be that much. I do know that even in high range on the Grizzly if you chop the throttle at any speed, it slows down really quickly and if the braking was any more pronounced you would in all likelihood slip your back wheels in gravel or chat.

If you put it in Low you probably won't have to touch your hand/foot break at all. While ridin in high I usually find myself hitting the gas going down hills..

So I think it works good.

Your Honda Rubicon has permanent 4WD so to do an accurate comparison if you want to creep down a hill on a Grizzly, drop it into low range and push the 4WD button and it will creep down a hill just like the Rubicon does. In fact you may have to give it gas (like the Rubicon) because it will nearly come to a stop. Engine braking in high range is good, but not as effective as it is in low range. It should be standard practice where if you come upon a steep and gnarly hill that you drop it into low range anyway. Putting it into 4WD will give you added stability / braking control...

I just switched from an '03 Wolverine 5spd semi auto to an '07 700 Grizz. I'm not used to the grizzlie's EB and right now I feel like there is not enough rider control. Having to be on the throttle going down a steep hill without any brake doesn't make sense to me. It wastes fuel, makes more noise, etc.

If you like EB you will like the grizz. I'm just seeing if I adopt to it or if I can modify it to lessen the effects.
