Most likey a pick up coil and/or stator. you need to do a ohm(resistance) check on the pick up coil leads. Go to rickystator's web page for the wiring chart and ohm amounts. The cdi box's hardly ever go out.

The stator is a 3 wire plug under the gas tank. The plug comes up from the side cover on the clutch lever side of the bike. The orange wire is not pluged up to the stator, just the cdi box. On my '97 its a green, brown, and red wire at one plug, 3 white wires to the voltage reg, and a green and black wire on the 3rd plug. That just means your coil lead at the cdi is good.
