Default 01 sportsman shuts off

Ok my 01 sportsman 400 shuts off when it gets warm, Not allways as soon as it reaches operating temp, sometimes it will run for 20 to 40 minutes and then down for the count, let it cool down and vrooom cranks right up. It is loosing spark, but why??? I have checked all connections and replaced the CDI box. The coil seems fine. Where should I go next??? stator??? I dont know if this makes a differance but I also noticed my speedometer doesnt register speed anymore. everything digital still works but not the speed dial?? any suggestions would be appreciated. I would love this sporty to be trustworthy again.

electrical is about the hardest thing to figure out for sure. since you say it has no fire when it dies i too would think coil, or worse stator. seems like there should be a way to test these to make sure there good under a load. good luck.

Your coil has a thermal short. It works till it gets hot, then shorts to ground. Once cool; it works some more. I had a car that did the same thing.

Thanks for the responses and help, I hope this fixes it also, I have other quads, an 01 scrambler 400, two predator 90's, a suzuki king quad 450i, a suzuki 250 and a honda 110 ( I have a large family/ 4 kids n wife) but the sportsman is my favorite by far and I just want it fixed so I can trust riding it again. Thanks again and when the coil gets here Ill keep ya posted.

The last one i saw do this was an older suzuki 300 and it was the stator, it would get warm and die , no spark, cool off and run again till it got warm.

Well I got my new coil and wire today in the mail, installed it,,,and same ole thing. still shuts off when it it gets good and warmed up. I guess the only thing left is the stator, unless anyone has some other ideas. I hate the fact that my favorite four wheeler, is the only one thats undependable. Can't wait to get this thing fixed. Any other ideas before I get the new stator?????

When it dies you have pulled the plug and verified that ther is no spark , right? If so I would still bet on the stator, there are tests you can do on the components but you will need a polaris service manual.
